Dentists usually receive a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (DDS) at an accredited university. They may also obtain additional qualifications in other disciplines as well. In the United States, a dentist must pass both written and clinical examinations administered by boards certified by the American Dental Association (ADA) ‘s Section 7 qualification program. He or she must also complete a minimum of five years of specialized training, after which he or she must be board-certified by the state in which he or she practices.
The process of obtaining a license as a dentist commences with sitting for the required exam. If one passes the exam, he or she will be given an official license by the state board of medicine. However, before one can practice as a dentist, he or she must attend and pass the national board of dental specialty qualifying examinations. This process requires diligence and persistence on the part of the candidate. In order to pass the examination, a candidate might need to have prior training and experience in the particular specialty to which he or she is going to apply.
